Toronto Raptors vs. Boston Celtics News and Notes
The Raptors are limping toward the All-Star break dealing with a COVID outbreak that’s rocked the entire organization. Toronto had a pair of games postponed before getting dominated by the Eastern Conference’s worst team last night. The Raptors had Detroit hand them their lunch with a 129-105 beatdown without Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby, Malachi Flynn, Patrick McCaw, and Pascal Siakam. Playing without three of their top five scorers, the Raptors were severely shorthanded on both ends of the floor. Head Coach Nick Nurse and much of his coaching staff were also unavailable against Detroit. They will likely also miss tonight’s meeting with the Celtics.
Kyle Lowry and Norm Powell will have to shoulder the offensive load once again. Powell had a game-high 36 points while Lowry chipped in with 21 points and six assists in the loss. Chris Boucher had 18 off the bench and will also have to step up for the shorthanded squad.
Boston, who had their own COVID issues earlier in the season, look to get to the halfway point of the year on a four-game win streak after a month-long funk. The Celtics are 3-0 on their current homestand on the strength of wins over the Pacers, Wizards, and most recently, the Clippers. Kemba Walker led the Celts with a team-high 25 to go along with six assists, while Jaylen Brown had 18, and Jayson Tatum scored 14 in the 117-112 win. Boston withstood a game-high 32-point attack from Paul George to down the Clippers, who were playing without Kawhi Leonard.
Tatum led the way a few days earlier with a team-high 31 points in a one-point victory over the Wizards. A few nights before that, Walker was the man again putting up a game-high 32 in an impressive win over the Pacers. Kemba has been the most consistent Celtic, recently averaging 26 a night throughout the win streak.
The over has come through in eight of the past nine games the Raptors have played a winning team and the past four Celtics’ games against teams with a losing record. Boston has covered just once in their past eight following a win, while Toronto has covered only once in their past four overall. The Raptors have covered just twice in their past ten against the Celtics and three of their past ten trips to Boston.
