- Spain may have struggled through to the semi-final but David Villa hasn't stumbled, having netted five. He equalled Emilio Butragueno's Spanish record haul from Mexico 1986 and became the first player since Brazil duo Ronaldo and Rivaldo in 2002 to score in four successive World Cup matches, taking him closer to the record of six shared by France's Just Fontaine (1958) and Brazil's Jairzinho (1970).
- Speaking of scoring, the most goals netted in one match was Russia's Oleg Salenko who smashed in five against Cameroon in 1994, during a 6-1 mauling.
- And in 1958 we saw the most goals in a World Cup final by one team when Brazil - inspired by a young Pele - put five past Sweden.
- The Swiss aren't known for being particularly entertaining but the 1954 World Cup, held amongst the yodelling and army knife sharpening Europeans, saw the most goals in a tournament, with a staggering 5.38 goals per game. Yikes.
- Antonio Carbajal of Mexico and Germany legend Lothar Matthaus have both turned out for their respective teams at the most World Cups - five in all. Carbajal from 1950 to 1966 and Matthaus in 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994 and 1998.
- Bora Miluntinovic and Carlos Albertio Parreira are both popular chaps, having coached five different teams at World Cups. Milutinović was in charge of Mexico in 1986, Costa Rica in 1990, the USA in 1994, Nigeria, 1998 and China in 2002. Parreira was the man for Kuwait in 1982, the UAE in 1990, Brazil in 1994 and 2006, Saudi Arabia in 1998 and South Africa in 2010.
